I was pleasantly surprised. It's a shame because he moves quickly through adventures in business that would have been really interesting to know the inner workings of, such as taking CNN from a fund-draining laughing stock of a cable station to a marquis cable station generating $100 million annually in revenue. Not that I have anything against the guy, it's just that I'm not all that drawn to him.
If you're a baseball fan, there are some pretty hilarious stories about the things he did when he first bought the team, such as going on the field to high-five his new free agent when he hit his first home run as a Brave. All in all, if I could do it again, I'd buy and read this book. The second half of the book, though still good, moves through important details too quickly, like he had a deadline and needed to finish.
First, I have to admit that I'm not a big Ted Turner fan. The narrative rings true, and he is really unorthodox in his approach to business and life (sleeping in his office on a Murphy bed).I was completely sucked in during the first 60% of the book, and I enjoyed hearing how he decided to go into television, as well as owning sports franchises (the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks). Given the bargain price here on Amazon, it's a steal if you're interested.
However, I am interested in biographies and I bought this book about a year ago and finally got around to reading it over the last couple of weeks. He's lived an interesting life, and gives a pretty complete look at his childhood and how he got his start in business, and ultimately television.
He dared to go where none had gone before especially in the television field and we would certainly not have the developments of today without his daring where others were afraid to venture. After hearing so much about Ted Turner, especially in our area, it was revealing to read his own story. It just might give some ideas of what it takes to get ahead in this cut throat world. This book is recommended to any who would like to know the story of the mouth of the South told from his own point of view. While many have been critical of this man, he has been outstanding in so many of his endeavors that he deserves praise. He may sound egotistical, but if one does not blow his own horn, it will not get blown.
Call Me Ted by Ted Turner, an audio book review.Success did not just fall out of the sky. Dedicated focused self-motivation and ballistic determination using defeats as a springboard to do his very best, Ted Turner's life of do-gooder projects has done more for world harmony than any other. If there was such a thing as a ten star rating this book would have to have it.
"Early to Bed.Early to Rise, Work like Hell and Advertise" is a slogan I gave to Ted Turner that is featured on the dust cover of this book.Jim KarolikKAROLIK ADVHouston, TX
I hihgly recommend you read this book. It is obvious that Ted wrote this himself instead of a Ghost writer. It is excellent.
